The Expanse Cocktails Project

Expanse Cocktail #101
Marama Brown

When the workers of Anderson Station banded together to take action for their children, Marama Brown became the face of the insurgency, communicating with the UNN to plead their case. When the situation became desperate, he found a way to broadcast a last message to the entire system, and into history.

In our hint for Marama Brown, we described him as: determined, nurturing, respected, patient, and centered.

We knew right away that his drink couldn’t be based on the intense, funky rum of many proud, cocky Belters. Instead we picked mostly smooth spirits for his compassion and commitment to nonviolence wherever possible. A hint of poitín, drink of Irish rebels and rural farmers, punches it up — he’ll do anything if it means protecting his child, out in deep space.

To garnish, we juxtaposed bee pollen, a sweet symbol of hardworking unity, with a graphic splash of bitters to illustrate the cruel end of Marama Brown and everyone he cared about.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce brandy
  • 1 ounce apricot liqueur
  • ¾ ounce Amara amaro d'arancia rossa
  • ¾ ounce lemon juice
  • ¼ ounce poitín
  • 1 egg white

Instructions:

Pour all ingredients into an empty cocktail shaker and dry shake for 15 seconds. Add ice and continue shaking until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a splash of bitters and a sprinkle of bee pollen.
